A little late to 2017

Yes I may be a little late to the new year party but as they say it's better late than never. I guess I'm going to give blogging/journaling yet another try. So much has been happening it seems to make sense to document it since I've not the greatest memory. So here goes...

So far January has found my Mother-in-law in the hospital since last Thursday. She was unresponsive when Dad tried waking her and without luck called 911. She finally was brought around and was told that her blood sugar was VERY low, as well as her potassium and sodium levels. The biggest worry was her kidneys which were one tiny step away from dialysis having begun renal failure. After many IV's of sugar water to help her blood sugar level out she began to become more alert. She is a bariatric patient which comes with it's own set of special challenges though. Very, very slowly the kidneys are beginning to work I'm told. Doctor's feel she may be discharged to a skilled nursing facility tomorrow.

My husband and I were there this past weekend for support and then he returned on Tuesday. I have stayed home with our 4 dogs so that he can concentrate on his family which is so important right now. His sister and Father are exhausted. My Father-in-law hasn't left her side since being admitted to hospital.

Another good reason to stay in town...I found out my Mother fell again Monday. This time down the upstairs to the landing with pizza boxes in hand. She chose to walk up the steps after ordering delivery and once she reached the top was caught on the railing and down she tumbled. Thankfully she didn't break anything or bleed this time but she's quite banged and bruised. She hadn't taken her cellphone with her and my Dad was running errands so she had to lay there until he returned about a half an hour later. There she lay with and pizza strewn all about and over her. We've talked about getting a life alert necklace but with her forgetfulness it shall be a great challenge to get her to keep it on. We'd suggested wearing her phone around her neck but again she doesn't really care for this idea either for numerous reasons so it's only a matter of time before she too injures herself again.

2017 has started out with a continuation of elderly parent syndrome and will likely be the theme of blogs to come.
