Pop Culture Pissyness

Today has been challenging for me. Reality really seems to suck and in order to distance myself from it I've decided to blog about some pop culture. Some people like knitting or photography or raquetball. Me, I like pop culture, television, music and other forms of that type entertainment! So sue me! I'll warn ya now that even if that 2nd stimulus packet becomes a reality, you can't get blood from a turnip though so good luck trying!
The first bit of silliness pertains to William Shatner. Now don't get me wrong I LOVE Boston Legal and do my best to stay up til 10pm those nights so we don't miss he and Spader's banter on 'Denny's' balcony! I also watched the original tv series Star Trek where he played Capt. Kirk but have to admit in those days he was a lot less interesting. More attempting to be a heartthrob with elvis hair then a serious character actor with multiple layers to uncover. So I can seriously see how Sulu's 'issues' with Shatner's ego is somewhat of a two way street. It appears Sulu has carried animosity toward Bill for many years and decided to publically blacklist him from his wedding to his gay partner recently. Below is the YouTube video of Bill talking about this so called 'psychosis'. Take a look and see if you aren't really 'feeling' Bill's attempt at looking concerned and bewildered as much as I am. He's a MUCH better actor then that! You'd think he could say it with FEELING! -LOL-

Now I realize Takei definitely has issues he needed to long ago come to terms with either by confronting Bill or in numerous therapy sessions. But I don't know that I would go so far as to place all the blame on him. Afterall Shatner has no idea what's it's like walking in Takei's shoes as a gay man who's never the leading man. Most of us can relate to employment environments that weren't always the most friendly or condusive to building relationships with 'everyone' in the office. Or in this case 'cast'. I know I have a lot of struggles with social anxiety that makes relationships difficult to cultivate with complete strangers. Especially in a very competitive and vain industry. So it makes me wonder from Shatner's description of their working relationship if he ever really cared to talk to the 'little people' on set. Or if he justifies his position as polite but aluff based on the insignifigance of Takei's character? Afterall he makes a point of reminding us that Sulu's part was much smaller then his since he wasn't there as often. Now I know even part timers that I've worked with deserve to be treated like they exist and should be acknowledged as valid people who are more then the sum of their 'part'. Shatner makes me wonder if he's just one of those oblivious people you see lost in their narcisistic fog and unable to seriously be in touch with the rest of us average joes. It doesn't change the way I feel about him as a talented actor. And I like laughing at his character. And I mean AT! Denny is a bafoon and though Shatner obviously plays it to the hilt and brilliant it still gives me some slight pleasure knowing the not so humble celebrity is a mere mortal who earns a living making an ass out of himself in primetime! That is all. I now must go back to reality and make the husband his supper! -chuckles- Holler back people and let me know your thoughts!
